On 28 December 1836 the Province of South Australia was proclaimed at Glenelg. It was different to other Australian colonies not being a convict settlement. Edward Gibbon Wakefield spoke of it as becoming a wealthy, civilised society.
George Fife Angas saw it as a pilgrim land where the persecuted could worship what they chose. Others saw no chains of class and caste, a land full of promise. It was an experiment in orderly colonisation and a triumph of planning.
It came to be a social and political crucible, a fascinating mix of religious disenters, political idealists, non-conformists and conservatives. Each wave of immigrants left its mark on the land and in Adelaide's style. The society spawned great social and political advances including full adult suffrage, women's suffrage, 1st Aboriginal Governor, 1st to allow women to stand for parliament, 1st woman judge, 1st to wipe out the legal consequences of illegitimacy, 1st state in the English speaking world to outlaw rape in marriage and the 1st woman Governor.
Adelaide was Australia's 1st planned city by Col. William Light amid furious controversy. Nestled between the Mt Lofty Ranges and St Vincent Gulf it is a square mile of tree lined wide elegant terraces, five leafy squares and surrounded by parklands which are a true legacy and the envy of our visitors.
Adelaide was named in honour of Queen Adelaide, wife of King William 1V.
The 1st vineyard was planted at North Adelaide in 1837 and today South Australia is centre of the Australian wine
industry producing 50% of Australia's wine and 65% of its total wine exports.
The showcase Barossa Valley is only 1 hour away and most major winemaking areas are close to Adelaide.
Copper was discovered at Kapunda and Burra Burra and miners came from Cornwall, Wales and Scotland.
The colony became known as the granary of Australia due to its high quality wheat produced on many moderate sized landholdings. The Goyder Line indicated where rainfall was suitable for farming but was not observed by some. Sheep and cattle farming past the Line was precarious due to drought.
A wealth of fine colonial architecture remains throughout SA and Adelaide's quality stone lives on in gems like the 1867 Post Office and the concentration of grand buildings along North Terrace (Many are listed above ).
It has been referred to as the Hairy-nosed Wombat State and often the butt of national jokes, however SA is a national treasure and should no longer be a "Secret" as our tourism is a $4 billion industry. The enviable lifestyle is relaxed, progressive, intellectual, unique, stimulating with room to move and wonderful places to visit such as the Outback, Coast, Riverland with a low cost of living. Generally it is still the 20 minute city without the congestion experienced in most other cities and countries. "Festival State" is due to over 400 festivals, carnivals, sporting and special events reflecting food, wine and culture including major events such as the Festival of Arts, Fringe, Womadelaide, Ring Cycle, Clipsal 500, Tour Down Under, Tasting Australia, etc..
Mild Mediterranean climate delivers hot, dry summers from December to March (average 28C) and short, mild winters from June to August (average 15C).
